“Many students, especially those who are poor, intuitively know what the schools do for them. They school them to confuse process and substance. Once these become blurred, a new logic is assumed: the more treatment there is, the better are the results; or, escalation leads to success. The pupil is thereby “schooled” to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is “schooled” to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work. Health, learning, dignity, independence, and creative endeavour are defined as little more than the performance of the institutions which claim to serve these ends, and their improvement is made to depend on allocating more resources to the management of hospitals, schools, and other agencies in question.”
— Ivan Illich, Deschooling Society (1973: 9)

I need to do more things
I need to be less lazy
I need to accomplish more
I need to improve myself
I need to find my meanings
I need to find my inspirations
And while I’m not sure if “need” is the correct word to use for those items rather than say, “want”
I definitely need to get some sleep.

My mom is a travel agent and I can confirm that people are legitimately this stupid when it comes to travel.
Is it bad that I’m at least a little pleased it’s not just Americans that are pointed out as being stupid, and then I just get sad because it’s a worldwide epidemic?
I want to make a snarky response to every one of these.
I am…a bit in awe, truth be told.
BEST. LIST, EVER.
yes let’s just scoot the island closer to great britain so that they and the americans have equal travel times to get home
Oh my god #19 is definitely one of the best things I have EVER read.

Some of the phone pictures I took on our Vancouver trip. Starting from top left going clockwise:
1. View at night from the Vancouver Art Gallery roof balcony. We went on Tuesday night because it was donation-based admission.
2. BC roads, this I believe was just after Kamloops.
3. Panoramic view from George Wainburn park in downtown Vancouver.
4. Selfies taken in front of the Manitoba street sign at Manitoba and West Broadway .
5.View of South Vancouver from the Skytrain, just before Bridgeport Station.

"With a sigh and gentle slouch of his shoulders he draws in a ragged breath, the wooden bar creaking as he does. ‘Look kid, one day you’ll figure it out. Few people in this world are irreplaceable, and the ones who aren’t, well, you’ll learn to live without them too.’ In a swift, practiced motion his finishes his drink and tucks in his chair. Patting his hat to his head, he bids her goodnight."
